When most people think of ceramic tile, they think of using it as flooring or lining their showers with it. But there is another common use that you will see often in PEI real estate without even realizing it. Ceramic tiles are used in backsplashes. Unless you're a house flipper or a contractor, you may not even know what a backsplash is. If this is the case, let us give you a little more information on backsplashes, what they're for, and why ceramic tile is a good choice to use on a backsplash.
A backsplash is a tiled area in a bathroom or kitchen that is designed to protect the wall from building up a layer of gunk, moisture, or being damaged by hot liquids. Ordinary painted drywall often cannot withstand constantly being splattered by soap, hair dye, spaghetti sauce, boiling water, and other substances commonly found in the kitchens and bathrooms of Mississauga homes. Rather than replacing a section of wall or tiling the whole wall, the area of wall in the splash zone will be covered in tile.

Not every kitchen or bathroom will require a backsplash. If the sink in the bathroom of your Mississauga real estate is far enough from the wall you can get away with not having a backsplash, but if you notice your wall is getting a buildup of toothpaste and soap scum on it, you may want to consider putting one in. Likewise a stand-alone oven/range combo usually comes with its own metal backsplash attached and can simply be placed against the wall as-is without worrying about tiling the wall behind it.
If you do decide that your luxury condos in downtown Toronto need a backsplash installed, three or four rows of tile will usually do it, depending on the size of the tile. Most backsplashes don't extend more than a foot or so up the wall and only cover the area directly behind the range, as this is the area that is most likely to be spattered with food during the cooking process. Some people don't like the look of a backsplash, however, and will opt to tile the whole wall under the cabinets just for continuity's sake.
Your backsplash need not be a purely practical element in your home. If you can find some tiles that really set off your custom cabinets in Toronto, you can use the backsplash as a design element in your kitchen or bathroom. Stamped tiles, such as blue Dutch scenes, are popular, as are using a design of several different colors or types of tile to create an artistic backsplash. If you plan to install the backsplash yourself, make sure to use the correct mortar or you will get gunk building up between the tiles.
